WHY JOIN? WHY RENEW?

Six Good Reasons to Join a Club

  1. Learn valuable skills.
    Riding alone is fine. Learning alone is an option, of course, but what you learn with a group is invaluable. Though what you really get out of this is watching others ride. Watching those with more experience is always helpful.

  2. Ride with a group.
    Riding with a group is a great way to see the cycling culture at work. See how to deal with road hazards, treat other cyclists, put into action the rules of the road and even where to ride. They can also help give you tips as they watch you ride. It's also nice to know that the Ride Leader won't let you be last!

  3. Motivation.
    You're out on a long ride by yourself and you decide to call it quits about half way through what you had planned. You make an appointment with yourself to ride every Monday night, but don't. You ride, but not hard enough to push yourself. If any of these describe you, the motivation you could get from a group of riders would be a great benefit.

  4. Safety in numbers.
    If you work at times that only leave you darker hours to ride or if you like to ride in less populated hours, riding with a group can help you with safety. If you're out in the sticks and your tire blows, someone is with you. If you fall and get hurt, you're not alone. This is a great reason to be with a group.

  5. Well planned rides.
    If you're new to the area or to cycling, or perhaps just haven't explored past your neighborhood, riding with a club will give you an organized tour with a good clue as to what's around the corner. Is it up hill or down? The club will know! The special rides are especially nice with SAG support and food.

  6. Social time.
    Enjoy the pre-ride chatter. Enjoy talking to other riders. Enjoy the eat break if the ride has one. The banquets aren't bad either.

Comments From DCC Members:

  • We ride on club rides and like to know where and when they begin.      Julia

  •  I renewed because I love cycling and hope to be able to do more this year.  Have not been doing as much as I used to do and want to increase my miles this year.  Also want to support the DCC.  Dan

  • I renewed because it’s the right thing to do = support the local bicycling club.  I try to ride a couple of the big events each year, but I generally just think it is important to support clubs that advocate my interest in bicycling at the local level.  And, of course, I enjoy reading the Spokes N Links regularly!  Keep up the good work.   Mike

  • Thanks for the email. We have received our cards and appreciated the quick and professional service.  The reason we have joined the DCC is because of the positive experiences with the people of Fred's Ride.  The DCC supports Fred's Ride and my family supports the DCC. Keep up the great work! We will see ya at the classic!  Ron

  • Here are my reasons for joining/renewing my membership in the DCC:
    1) I've been an avid bicyclist most of life (I'm 45 now), and I think supporting bicycling in any form is good (I.e. I might not get any direct benefit from it, but by supporting bicycling, I'm getting plenty of indirect benefits);
    2) Even though I very rarely participate in any DCC major events (usually too busy), I do participate in "Fred's" ride, which is a DCC weekly ride, as often as I can. I think this is a great ride, and a great ride with a great bunch of people. I hope all of the DCC ride are as enjoyable as this one.  Scott

  • Pat and I would like the newsletter. We want to keep up with what is going on with the club. I feel that, overall, the club is functioning much better than in the past. The only thing that we would like to see are more D rides. We simply are not able to do C rides; so, we mostly ride on our own. Keep up the good work.  Henry aka. Hoehandle

  • CYCLING WEBSITE FOR SW OHIO:  My personal web site contains information useful to cyclists in our area, particularly south of Dayton.  It includes:
    Organized rides - a schedule of major cycling events around SW Ohio;
    Local rides - a listing of local rides within a 12-15 mile radius of Middletown;
    Detours - a regularly  updated listing of current road work and detours,
    Daylight - a table showing hours of daylight in our area throughout the year;
    Itineraries - for riding to and between points within 25 miles or so of Middletown, such as Moraine, Farmersville, Camden, Oxford, Mason, Morrow, Lebanon, Waynesville.
    Assorted other cycling articles, resources, and links.
    Access the Bicycling area of the site at http://s.a.joyce.home.att.net/cycling.htm, or leave off the "cycling.htm" part to access the Welcome page and menus for the entire site.

  •  (2) CYCLING ID CARDS:  I understand DCC has tossed around the idea of an ID card that cyclists can carry while riding.  I currently print such cards for my own family with an MS Works database.  It could be translated to MS Access if there is interest.  The card identifies the bearer, as well as his/her physician, emergency contact, blood type, medical conditions and medications, and health care insurer.  Having this laminated card in a little pouch that I always carry while riding certainly beats carrying a fat wallet or fumbling with driver's license and med-insurance cards before and after each ride.    Steve Joyce

  • Hi...I enjoy the newsletter and go on occasional club rides.  Jan

  • The reason for renewing my membership is to stay abreast of what my DCC friends are doing these days.  Hope everything is well with you and everyone around Tipp.  Please say hello to everyone.  Ty

  • I renewed because I believe in supporting an organization that provides excellent riding opportunities.  Although I don't live local to the Dayton area and therefore can't participate in the daily or weekly rides, I have enjoyed the Huffman Spring Classic and hope to participate in other rides as time allows.  I have also signed on to use the DCC truck during GOBA this year for the first time.  Jackie

  • I renewed out of habit.  Board is doing a good job.  Scott

  • I have taken a two year appointment at AFRL but my home (and my prior "retirement") is in southwestern Colorado. I heard about you from the individual who helped set up my rental furnishings and decided to get into contact for when the warmer weather arrives. Looking for possible weekend cycling opportunities. Have not cycled in groups before. Tom Cruse

  • Hi, thank-you very much for all your effort.  We're delighted to be members.  I wanted to join for several reasons, 1.  I'm sure the mileage logs will motivate me to ride more.  2.  I want to support the cycling club.  3.  I enjoy getting the newsletter.  4. I eventually want to get involved with some of the club activities. Hope to meet you someday, Sincerely, Bonnie Ramsby

  • I joined DCC @ 3 years ago because, as a new roadie, I wanted a source for events in the Dayton area. I renew each year for that reason PLUS I've begun to know the people associated with DCC and I like them. GATOR (Dave Gates)

  • Hi from Cincinnati.  My buddy, John Vago, and I usually try for your Huffman spring ride and Wright ride, and we appreciate all your work.  Nice routes, good refreshments, nice people.  An added benefit this year I understand is that you won't be getting the cicadas.  Fred Lucas.

  • My email address is still correct.  And keep on doing what you are doing.  It is a great club and we enjoy the rides when it gets warm.  They always help us get ready for our yearly biking vacations.  Last year we did the Canadian Rockies and this year we are doing the Tuscany coast in Italy.  Wayne Dawson

  • First, we joined to have the opportunity to ride with like-minded folks.  We have made a commitment to ride more this year.  Second, I ride with three or four guys who all belong and sponsor a weekly ride I frequently join.  So, I suppose I'd say having friends who belong motivated me to join.  Third, we liked the idea of getting a 10% discount from some LBS like Kettering Cycle.  Brenda bought a new bike and the savings on accessories (pedals etc) helped defray the cost of joining.  Thanks for your quick responses to my queries.

  •  This is a renewal for me (I moved away, then came back.)  I'm interested in the local club rides.  The web page has some info, but I suspect? the newsletter has more.  (Alan Johnson)

  • We renewed because we like to get the newsletter and stay informed of organized and group rides.

  • I joined DCC because I usually ride alone and I am getting bored of the same old route. I hope to fit some of the group rides into my schedule and to meet other cyclists to share the road with.

  • I'm a new member, joining primarily because I've been on a few rides latey with DCC members (Jeff, Kenny, Val, Bruce) and at their urging (particularly Bruce Campbell!), signed up. I work at Wright-Pat and live in Springfield, and I guess I haven't joined before this simply because I'm not in the Dayton local area for a lot of the evening activities. I hope to make as many of the rides as possible and will be interested in events in the Springfield area. Thanks for the email.

  • Thanks for checking in. I've been a satisfied member of the club for a couple of years now. I think that the events you organize and the way you communicate them are wonderful. One thing I've noticed is that the club is definitely geared more towards people who have been riding for a while. That's not a bad thing at all. However being a novice bicyclist myself, I'm often intimated by rides that don't have a "d" designation. And there just don't seem to be that many of those outside of working hours. It would be nice to see more. Then hopefully I could improve and feel comfortable in the "c" or "b" rides. :) A lot of your special events have shorter runs and family rides. That's really wonderful. And those events are one of the main reasons I stay a member. By the way, I just wanted to clarify that other ride leaders in the club never make me feel intimidated when I ask them about the ride difficulty. The couple of times I've called bike leaders, they're nothing but supportive, encouraging me to come out. I would just feel really bad about keeping someone in the group back. Thanks for asking. I get a lot out of the club and will continue to be a member.

  • We joined many years ago because we were interested in the scheduled rides. As we got busier we rode less of those but more of the special rides, like the Old World Tour, Day Ox Ride, and the Wine Ride. We still haven't ridden the Camp-O-Rama but we will someday! I commute to work and like reporting my miles. I am sure that I ride more often because I can see my mileage grow in the newsletter.

  • I've renewed because I like the newsletter, group rides, and discounts at local shops for being a member. Thanks.

  • I renewed primarily to continue to get Spoke 'n Link. I do participate in a couple of rides each year, but my real benefit is reading S'nL.

  • I renewed because I like reading the SnL and also hope that my membership help supports the club tours and biking in Dayton in general. Plus I'm and avid biker.

  • Why I joined? To get the Spoke 'N' Link mailed to me. Why I renewed? To get the Spoke 'N' Link mailed to me. I used to go from LBS to LBS looking for copies of the SnL each month and finally figured if ya can't beat em, join em. What a great biking magazine! And now there's some color to it! While I'm not what some would consider an avid cyclist, I do put in about 1500 miles a year on the bike paths and ride in many of the organized rides. It's also nice to belong to a group with the same interests as I have. Keep up the good work!

  • We (my wife and I) are joining for the first time and the primary reason is to further our enjoyment of cycling. I am a long time cyclist whose level of participation used to come and go. Always somewhat active but at times, even more active. Right now, I am in one of the more active times and for health and fun, want to stay that way. I think the DCC can help in that goal. My wife, Mary, is much newer to active cycling and is looking for additional social outlets. We have 3 boys in college and their activities (soccer, theatre, school, etc) were our social activities. That was all there was time for, but now that we are empty nesters, so to speak, we thought the DCC would be a fun thing to expand our horizons with. Plus the discount at the local cycle shops doesn't hurt either. I am looking forward to joining more rides, developing additional cycling friends and using the DCC to enhance my knowledge of cycling both as a recreation and potentially commuting.

  • I joined the club for the organized rides. As a result I've met a lot of neat folks with similar interests and received a lot of good advice regarding cycling techniques and equipment.

  • Why did I join the club...As you brought it, up I sometimes wonder. No really, I do enjoy the group rides even through we didn't participate this year. I enjoy cycling even though much has been solo this year. We have volunteered a little to help out so others can enjoy the events. If and when my wife can get on a bicycle again we will participate in the rides again. The newsletter is interesting.

  • My reasons for joining and renewing membership in DCC are mostly to support the advocacy efforts of the club. I enjoy the newsletters and look forward to getting them. I am in the general category of "Retired Senior Citizen" and my riding (about 2000 miles a year) is an effort to stay fit, keep my heart beating and live forever. Most of my riding is done alone and on bike paths. I was glad when the club started tracking bikeway miles so I could get a Plaque and some little tags to hang on it. I keep saying that I will make it to the "Bike Ins" so I can meet some DCC folks but that hasn't happened yet.

  • It's taken me awhile to return your message, but I have already received our cards and latest newsletter, thanks. We joined because we're new to the area, and thought the club would have some info on local rides. Because of our work schedules, I may not be able to ride with the group often, but I'd like some info on local rides (which roads on the map are safe to ride on). The trail system is pretty nice (I could do without all the intersections), but seems kinda flat. If you've got info on local rides that start close to our home (in Oakwood), and offer a variety of topography (some hills, some flats, all on paved roads), I'd be interested in maps and/or directions. With the onset of winter weather, I'm really riding a lot on my trainer, but if there's groups of folks who go out in the cold (dry, please) perhaps I might join them at some point. We just moved here from Okinawa, where I rode last Christmas in shorts and a light jacket or arm warmers.
